CTET Notes on History- BOOKS AND BURIALS

  • There are four vedas: Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva
  • The oldest Veda is the Rig Veda comprised about 3500 years ago – It has more than a thousand hymns called sukta or well said

– It praises 3 gods,

Agni– the god of fire

Indraa warrior god

Soma – a plant from which a special drink was prepared

These hymns were composed of sages (rishis)

  • Sanskrit is a part of a family of languages known as Indo-European- Assamese, Gujarati, Hindi, Kashmiri, and Sindhi and many European languages like English, German, Greek, Italian, Spanish belong to this family, They are called family because they have many words in common
  • Those used in the northeast belongs to the Tibeto-Burman family
  • Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam belong to the Dravidian family
  • Languages spoken in Jharkhand and parts of central India belongs to the Austro-Asiatic Family
