  • A very big kingdom is an empire
  • Ashoka’s Maurya dynasty was founded by his grandfather Chandragupta Maurya, about 2300 years ago
  • Chandra gupta was supported by a wise man named Chanakya or Kautilya whose ideas are in book Arthashastra
  • Chandra Gupta- Bindusara- Ashoka

There were several cities in the empire

  • Pataliputra (Capital)
  • Taxila – Gateway to the northwest
  • Ujjain- lay on route from north to south
  • Merchants, officials and crafts persons lived here
